Dick Nickname?

Stanley has always wondered how the nickname Dick was assigned to guys named Richard. Was there a guy named Richard who was a dick to those around him and the name just caught on? Was Dick used to describe a penis before or after the first Richard crossover?

Kind of a chicken or the egg thing I guess. Anyway, it's probably not good for your career to call your boss Dick, even if his name is Richard.
